Los
Cyprinodontidae (="carpas con dientes") son unos pequeños peces distribuidos por
Africa, América, Europa y Asia. En España existen tres especies endémicas:
Valencia hispanica, Aphanius baeticus y Aphanius iberus. y otra introducida: Fundulus heteroclitus.
Las tres especies están en grave peligro, algunas de sus poblaciones ya se han extinguido; el hombre es autor y responsable de su desaparición: A la destrucción y/o transformación de sus hábitats podemos añadir el incremento de la contaminación y la introducción de especies exóticas tanto depredadoras como competidoras.
